This 1905 postcard, on the right, is looking down the High Street and the buildings on the right of Harris's Shipyard, beyond which is Rooks Bay where the Colchester Dock Transit is now. Below, on the left, is a modern photo of the same quay. The photograph on the right above was taken at the 1904 Rowhedge Regatta and the Albion, bet doing a fabulous trade, can be clearly seen on the left of the photograph.. Regattas were a great fun day for all especially as the pubs were open all day on such occasions. Quaffing Daniell's beer no doubt. This first picture is an early photograph of Glebe Farm with the magnificent tithe barn in the background all long since disappeared and in its place is the modern bungalows in Hill View Close. The latter, I am delighted to say, shows the ferry that once plied daily. The service is still available during the summer months - courtesy of the "Wivenhoe Ferry Trust" - many thanks chaps. The photo on the left was taken during the 1910 regatta - not sure about the occupants of the....boat - sea sick - can not be villagers. The other old post card is of the Walnut tree, still thriving and the supplier of fine 'real ales' .......................................................................................................................................................
The photograph above is a recent shot of the row of cottages at the bottom of Head Street.with the cottage on the left named 'Smugglers Cottage'. This is the cottage that is reputed to have a tunnel running to the Three Crowns on the corner, almost opposite, of the High Street. Reckon it was so the occupants could slip out for a few late ones!
